Susan Boyle - the view from Youku
The world has followed enraptured and amazed as British reality show contestant Susan Boyle has risen from humble village nobody to overnight sensation. Youtube being blocked here in China I have been watching it on Youku - the Chinese equivalent. Like Youtube, Youku has a comments function and quite a few people have commented on the Susan Boyle clip. Those fearing a clash of cultures between the East and West will be relieved to know that Chinese people love Susan Boyle too, or at least the small percentage of them who know who she is love her.
The clip of Susan Boyle has been viewed 110,000 times on Youku and the first few comments, picked at random are:
A compliant from one viewer that she is ‘a little offbeat’
But another enthuses: ‘who knew till now that online entertainment can produce something so spectacular, almost a religious experience, you can’t analyse it.’
A third listener is ‘pleasantly surprised’ and says that ‘God gave her a good throat!’
A fourth wonders: ‘is this clip from a reality tv show or some awesome movie, their faces are so rich in expression, audience and performer!
Finally, one viewer says ‘really moving!, i genuinely shivered when I saw it!’
I wonder if the fourth comment is aimed at CCTV, the relatively bloodless provider of official content to Chinese tv? You can see the Youku clip of Susan Boyle and the comments here.
